Before You Store: Tips For Keeping Your Belongings Secure Inside Your Unit
We work around the clock to keep your belongings safe from the outside. But, if you plan for you belongings to be in a storage unit long-term, here are some things you can do to ensure their safety inside the units themselves.
Plastic Containers Are Key: Use plastic tubs or corrugated plastic boxes to store your items. Cardboard is useful in the short-term, but over time the natural fibers decompose or, even worse, attract unwanted guests, like moths or fabric beetles. Metal bins oxidize from the moisture in the air, even in the ideal 65% humidity. That means climate controlled units are even susceptible. Plastic bins are stronger and more durable in the long run.
Label Your Bins: This seems like a given, right? Most people do label their bins with a one or two word description, like “Halloween Decorations”. We urge you to be more specific in your labeling. Write a list of the items in the bin, like “hanging skeleton, bat decorations and light projectors”. You can either write it directly on the bin itself or on a piece of paper taped to the side of the bin. So, no matter how long the bins sit there, you won’t have to worry about forgetting what’s in them.
Expert Tip: Write your list in dry erase marker on the bin itself and let the ink dry completely. This ink will stay until you decide to wipe it off and use the bin again. If the surface of the bin is not smooth, you may need a little rubbing alcohol or window cleaner to remove the ink.
